Abstract
1350392 Recovering Ni, Co and Cu from oxidic Fe materials H J ROORDA P E QUENEALI and S C TOWNSHEND 17 May 1971 [9 Oct 1970 19 Feb 1971] 48169/70 and 5054/71 Heading C1A An oxide material containing Fe and lesser amounts of Ni, Co, and/or Cu, is selectively reduced so as to convert to metal all the Ni, Co and Cu but only a minor amount of the Fe, and Cl 2 is passed into an aqueous immersion of the reduced material so as to take into solution the metallic Ni, Co, Cu and Fe. The starting material may be an ore, concentrate or slag, e.g. nickeliferous limonite or a Ni, Mg silicate, or the calcine obtained by roasting ores containing S or As, e.g. pyrrhotites or pyrites. The material may also contain precious metals or Mn which are taken into solution, and Cr or Al which are removed by physical means or alkaline roasting and leaching. Reduction may be effected at 500-950 C. using oil, coke or gases, e.g. CO 2 + H 2 + N 2 , as reducing agents. The material may be cooled in N 2 rapidly, or slowly to convert FeO into Fe and Fe 3 O 4 . The Fe may be selectively reoxidized by treatment with CO 2 or water vapour, e.g. by rapid cooling with water. Part of the Ni may then be extracted by carboxylation or ammonia leaching. Chlorination may be effected at 65 C. to the b.pt., using water, sea water NaCl solution, or the solution from a previous chlorination. It may be continued until oxidation of dissolved iron to Fe<SP>3+</SP> begins (pH 2-3) or until it is complete (pH 1-2). Fe<SP>2+</SP> can be oxidized with O 2 before or after separation of solids. The solution containing FeCl 3 can be used to pre-leach the reduced material, or the Fe<SP>3+</SP> can be precipitated with alkali, e.g. CaO or CaCO 3 . The chlorination may be carried out in at least 2 stages in countercurrent, at least one being at superatmospheric pressure. The Cl 2 may be mixed with air, O 2 , or inert gas. Recovery of Ni, Co, Cu: the solution may be treated with an organic extractant before or after separation of solids, the extract stripped to form aqueous chlorides, and the chlorides hydrolysed or oxdized to oxides or reduced to metals. Alternatively the metals may be precipitated as sulphides, hydroxides or carbonates. NiS may be purified to remove Fe, Co and Cu by treatment with fused chloride salt and then oxygen blown to Ni. Cl 2 may be recovered and reused.
