Abstract

1350222 Automatic electric control UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 15 Aug 1972 [28 July 1971] 35555/71 Heading G3N [Also in Division G1] A semi-automatic draughting machine comprises a conductive sheet over which drawing paper may be positioned and which may be contacted by a stylus 7 piercing the paper to provide signals indicative of the contact position. These positional signals are stored in a memory of a computer 3. The machine includes an XY plotter comprising a drawing instrument 16 actuated by a motor 13 under the control of signals on line 17 from the computer 3. The computer also stores programmes for the instrument 16 to draw prescribed loci (e.g. line, arc or circle) selectable by switches 20, so that an operator may command the machine to draw a prescribed locus at a position determined by the stylusdetermined data. The computer may be provided with a backing store 21, and a store of magnetic cards with data for drawing proprietary designs. There is also provision for the draughtsman when making an original drawing, to store data for the subsequent reproduction of this drawing. Data concerning each movement of the motor and the related position on the surface are transmitted to the computer and transferred to a magnetic card. The drawing instrument may be pencil, pen or a powder depositor; powder lines being erasable by vacuum and fixable by heat. A number of machines, as shown 5, may operate in parallel.
