Abstract

1349933 Charging batteries JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 16 July 1971 [8 Aug 1970] 38347/70 Heading H2H An electrical system for a road vehicle comprises an alternator 12, having a wound field winding 21, the alternator being arranged to charge the vehicle battery 11 by way of a full-wave rectifier 13, the system being provided with means whereby the field winding 21 is energized only when the battery voltage is below a predetermined value. The field winding 21 is energized by way of three thyristors 14, 15, 16 which are connected to the phase points of the alternator 12, gating signals being applied to the thyristors by a circuit sensitive to the battery voltage. Resistors 24, 25 are connected across the battery 11 such that when the battery voltage is below a predetermined value a Zener diode 26 is non-conductive and hence a transistor 27 is non-conductive. Gate current thus flows through a resistor 31 to the gates of the thyristors thereby causing the field winding 21 to be energized. When a predetermined voltage is reached the Zener diode 26 conducts, the transistor 27 then becoming conductive, thus removing the gate current from the thyristors to de-energize the field winding 21. A capacitor 29 is connected to the base of the transistor 27 to render the transistor unsusceptible to transients and resistors 35, 36, 37 are provided to minimize the difference in gate cathode voltages required to fire the thyristors. A resistor 38 is provided to provide energization of the field winding 21 at starting when the ignition switch 22 is closed and resistors 17, 18, 19 are provided to minimize the risk of the thyristors being turned on by transients.
