1349917 Sanitary closets E BONDONIO 4 July 1972 [8 Feb 1972] 31132/72 Heading E1C Automatic operation of a sanitary closet comprising a bowl 1, cistern 17, seat 4, movable lid 3 (or sliding bowl cover plates 19, Fig. 4), and ventilating system 13, is initiated by a person standing on a platform 8 which is hinged for vertical pivoting movement and either operates a microswitch, as shown, to effect opening of the lid 3 (or cover plates 19), e.g. by means of a motor 9 having a reduction gear coupled, via a gear pinion and toothed sector gearing 12, to the lid 3, or effects such opening movement by a lever system (not shown), after which the further operation of the closet is effected by the person sitting down on the seat 4, which operates a microswitch 15 to energise a fan (not shown) of the ventilating system 13 and at the same time open a valve connecting the cistern to a spreader jet producing a fine spray of water 14 in the upper part of the bowl. After use of the closet, a main flush discharge valve is operated as a result of reverse operation of the microswitch 15 when the person rises from the seat. At the same time as the flush discharge valve is operated an atomising nozzle 16 sprays a perfumed de-odorant into the atmosphere for a time determined by a time delay switch (not shown) associated with the atomiser. A pair of armrests 5, one on each side of the seat 4 are pivotable upwardly about pivots on either wall brackets or a rear wall 23 (Fig. 4) secured to the bowl. In the embodiment of Fig. 4, the cover plates 19 are in the form of shutters slidable laterally towards and away from a longitudinal centre line of contact 20. Operation of these shutters (or of the lid 3 in Fig. 2) may be assisted manually by operation of a foot pedal 18 which provides alternative operation in case of failure of the electric motor driven mechanism of Fig. 2.
