Abstract
1349814 Counting apparatus; indicating knobs BOURNS Inc 10 May 1972 [10 Jan 1972] 21701/72 Heading G4D A digital counter mounted in an operating knob for a multition potentiometer or the like and indicating in hundredths of a turn the position of the potentiometer has a plurality of number wheels 38, 40, 42, the lowest 38 of which is driven at a speed five times that of the knob, by a driving gear 38p, and has the decade of numerals printed twice in succession around its circumference so that, while the number wheel still indicates in hundredths of a turn, its speed and therefore wear are reduced. The outer shell 24, 28 of the knob are secured to the potentiometer shaft S by a set screw 24c. Within the shell 24 is a gear 22 prevented from rotating by lugs 20k attached to the potentiometer. Rotable in the other half 28 of the shell is a base 32 supporting the counter. The base 32 is coupled by three planet gears 26 pivoted in the shell 24 to the gear 22 so that it too remains stationary. Teeth 28g on the inside of shell 28 drive the gear 38p to operate the counter. The number wheels of the counter are coupled by Geneva type gearing the lowest wheel 38 having two sets of transfer teeth so that the tenths wheel 40 is rotated two steps for each rotation of the hundredths wheel.
