1349447 Polish compositions; abrasive compositions E R HOWARD Ltd 11 May 1971 [13 May 1970 9 June 1970] 25 Aug 1970 23114/70 40810/70 and 41901/73 Headings C4V and C5W [Also in Division C3] A car polish or metal cleaner comprises a glossing agent, an absorbent finely-divided filler, and a dispersing agent of formula wherein R is a non-aromatic hydrocarbon group of at least 6 carbon atoms, R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are each H or a non-aromatic hydrocarbon group optionally substituted by an amino or substituted amino group, or R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> may together form a heterocyclic ring, or a salt of the dispersing agent. The filler is defined as having 50% particles below 2 microns, and 50% 2-6 microns, with not more than 0À1% above 40 microns. The glossing agent may include paraffin, polyethylene, carnauba or montan (including oxidized and esterified montan) wax or a silicone, e.g. polydimethyl siloxane, in an amount up to 6% by wt. of the total polish, e.g. up to 2% wax + up to 4% siloxane. The filler is preferably SiO 2 , particularly Tripoli powder, but may include metal particles as a minor constituent, e.g. up to 1% of Cr, Al, Sn or stainless steel in a total of 1-50% by wt. filler, to give a heavy duty polish or metal cleaner. The amine dispersant may form 0À1-5% of the polish and may be in the form of a fatty acid salt, e.g. with oleic acid; dicyclohexylamine, tallow polypropylene diamine and stearylamine are examples of the general classes suitable, which are substantially water-insoluble. Optional ingredients include up to 10% of a fluorinated hydrocarbon polymer of particle size 0À1-100 microns; up to 0À5% of a synthetic hydrocarbon resin; up to 90% of a solvent, e.g. white spirit, petroleum ether, toluene, naphtha or Stoddard solvent; and up to 15% water. The composition is preferably formulated as an aerosol, the polish concentrate constituting 60-98% thereof and the propellent 2-40% by wt. Specified propellents are dichlorodifluoromethane, dichlorotetrafluoroethane, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, butane and propane. In general the ingredients are chosen to give a single phase, any water present being absorbed on the dispersed filler. Examples 1-7 and 9 relate to a polish, and Example 8 to a metal cleaner, the latter containing 50% by wt. Tripoli powder and 0À1% chromium powder.
