Scouring-apparatus. - Apparatus for removing silt, sand, mud, &c. from river-beds, of the kind in which vanes or baffles depending between two barges deflect the flow of water in the river on to the bed of silt &c., comprises at least two floats or barges with depending rigid vanes or baffles, means for raising and lowering the baffles, vanes or guides submerged to concentrate the flow of water between the floats, and means for raising and lowering the vanes or guides. Fig. 1 shows a plan view, and Fig. 3 a view in elevation, of the apparatus. Any number of rigid baffles f pivoted transversely between two barges a are each adapted to be raised and lowered by a winch g. Side boards attached at right-angles to the sides of the baffles may be employed to prevent the water from flowing off at the sides, and the baffles may be provided with wheels on their lower edges. The forward ends of the barges a are bevel-shaped and provided with guides or vanes c connected together by a cross-bar e and braced or stayed. The funnel shape thus formed guides the water between the barges. The guides c may be raised or lowered. In cases where the silt has become compressed into a hard mass, scarifiers may first be drawn over it to loosen it.
