Abstract

1348491 Bis - (4 - hydroxy - phenyl or - benzyl)-tetrasulphides IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 30 July 1971 [13 Aug 1970] 39101/70 Heading C2C The invention comprises compounds of the formula wherein each R and R 1 is H or a hydrocarbon group, X is an integer of at least 4, and n and m are 0 or 1. They may be obtained by reacting a mercaptan of the formula with a sulphur chloride of the formula Compounds in which n = m =0 may also be prepared by reacting 2 mols of a phenol of formula with one mole of a polysulphur chloride of the formula Cl-S x -Cl at temperatures between - 20‹ and 250‹ C. Compounds in which n = m = 1 may also be prepared by reacting a compound of the formula or a quaternary salt thereof with pyridine, with an aqueous solution of sodium polysulphide of the formula Na 2 S x . Impure compounds of Formula I may also be prepared by heating a phenol of Formula I wherein x is 2 with sulphur. Examples are given for the preparation of the compounds. They are useful as antioxidants for natural and synthetic rubbers, rubber articles and latices, polymers and mineral oils.
