Abstract

1347655 Coated bottles SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 13 July 1972 32831/72 Heading B2E A bottle, e.g. of glass, is provided with an external coating of an uncured synthetic polymer or a composition containing at least one uncured synthetic polymer, the polymer having a tensile strength of at least 50 Kg/cm<SP>2</SP> and an elongation at break of at least 400%. The polymer is preferably applied alone and is a thermoplastic rubber which is unvulcanised and reversibly plastifiable. The preferred polymer is a block copolymer of the formula A-B-A where the polymer blocks A are the same or different and are formed of mono-alkenyl substituted aromatic hydrocarbon units, and polymer block B is formed of conjugated diene hydrocarbon units. The average M.W. of each A block is [between 5,000 and 50,000 and the average M.W. of the B block is between 40,000 and 500,000, the amount of A being 10 to 65% by weight of the total of the block copolymer. In the only example the copolymer is polystyrene-polybutadiene-polystyrene. The copolymer is applied as a solution by dipping or spraying. A further coating of a thermosetting resin such as polyester or epoxy resin may be applied. Other coatings (not specified) may be applied over or under the block copolymer coating.
