Abstract
134,764. MacLachlan, J. C. April 29, 1919. Rotary apparatus.-Relates to apparatus for obtaining in a granular form the solid constituents of semi-liquid viscous and pasty substances such as the solid constituents of milk. butter-milk, pulped fruit, meat, &c. In preparing in granular form the solid constituents of liquids such as milk, they are first condensed to a pasty condition. The apparatus comprises a highspeed rotary discharge head 49, Fig. 2, and beater 47, the pasty substance being thrown out of the discharge head by centrifugal force against the beater blades, by which it is disintegrated and thrown into a chamber through which a blast of hot air is forced. The material is led to a fixed tube 37, around which a tubular spindle 34 mounted in ball bearings is rotated. The. spindle 34 carries a head 49 provided with eccentric perforations and carrying beater blades 47, which diverge downwardly from the axis of rotation and extend circumferentially on lines eccentrically from the axis and overlap, as shown in Fig. 3, so as to form air passages between the beater blades. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 1, milk is fed by gravity from the tank y to a similar spraying-head into a chamber 7 traversed by a blast of hot air from the pump 16, by which the milk is concentrated. This process is repeated until the milk is obtained in a pasty state. The milk is then pumped to a hopper 11 from which it is fed by a screw 40 to the spray heads, where it is similarly sprayed and disintegrated in the jacketed chamber 19 and dried by means of hot air admitted by ducts 30. The granulated milk is removed by means of screws 23. A duct 51 is provided admitting cold air, by which overheating of the beater is presented.
