Abstract
1347465 Colour facsimile IPC SERVICES Ltd 17 Sept 1971 [23 Sept 1970] 45398/70 Heading H4F A scanner for graphic material is controlled by a computer to effect scanning of any desired sub-area of the material, the computer supplying co-ordinate values of successive points to which the scanning light spot is moved to effect this sub-area scan. As shown applied to an arrangement for scanning a transparency 5 and deriving colour outputs from photomultipliers 7 which are processed at 9 to derive magenta, yellow, cyan, and black signals each of which is fed to a photocomposing device for production of a printing image, the computer data controls the position and intensity of the spot on CRT 1 which is focused by objective lens 4 on to the transparency, and dichroic beam-splitters 20 direct red, blue and green light to the photomultipliers 7. Additional photomultipliers 14 are provided to enable modification of the colour density ranges in the processor 9. A photomultiplier 10 monitors the brightness and position of the spot on CRT 1 (a grating and counters may be used to obtain the spot position), and this information is used in 3 to correct the spot characteristics in retroactive manner. Figs. 2 and 3 illustrate the manner in which four separate pictures T1-T4 in the transparency 5 may be scanned to produce a graphic layout as shown in Fig 3, in which the pictures have been masked, scaled and transposed to the areas shown as P1-P4. This is done by providing for the period of each scan line such as Sx, Sy computer data to order the suitable positioning of the spot and its movement in steps of suitable size across the desired picture or part thereof. The output of the apparatus may then be combined with data (e.g. of text to be reproduced) in a manner described in Specification 1,279,296. Schematic circuits for units 3 and 9 are illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 respectively (not shown).
