Abstract

1346499 Blow-moulding S TERAOKA 18 May 1971 15624/71 Heading B5A Bowl-shaped blow-moulded articles are produced by supplying a parison or webs between male and female parts of a split mould, moving a hollow mould part which surrounds one of said parts into engagement with the other of said parts or a similar hollow mould part thereon to close the parison and finally closing the male and female parts together and blow-moulding the parison. As shown in Fig. 8, female mould parts 2 are mounted on a central platen 3 movable by ram 15 to co-operate with male mould parts 1 at closing planes X 1 -X 1 and X 2 -X 2 . Male mould parts 1 are moved by rams 4 and are surrounded by hollow mould parts 5 moved along guide rods 6 by rams 7. A parison a is extruded from die 9 of extruder 8 mounted on frame 13 for vertical and horizontal reciprocation by rams 12, 14 for extrusion along axis X 1 -X 1 or X 2 -X 2 . The parison a is closed by engagement of parts 5, 2, and air may then be supplied into it through line 10. While or after closing of parts 1, 2, the parison may be vented to maintain a predetermined pressure. The parison may be severed by shoulders 1a, 2a on the male and female parts and it may be cooled by connection to a separate high-pressure cooling air supply. Heated steam or cooling water may be supplied to the interior of the male part 1 or female part 2. In another embodiment (Fig. 10, not shown), webs (16) are supplied via rollers (17), heaters (19), the edges being fused by rollers (22). The articles produced may be filled with foam during or after blow-moulding (Fig. 13, not shown) or the opposite sides may be completely fused together (Fig. 12, not shown). A reinforcement (25, Figs. 15, 16, not shown) may be included. The filling may be polyurethane, polyester or phenolic resin and may contain glass fibres. The article may be a bath tub, boat hull or may be used as a mould (Figs. 17, 18, not shown).
