Abstract
1345578 Rotational casting ETABS METALLURGIQUES DU VAL D'AMBY 19 April 1971 [9 March 1970] 23301/71 Heading B5A Large cylindrical hollow vessels are moulded from thermoplastic powdered resins, e.g. polyolefins or polyamides, by a process comprising first heating the mould containing the powdered resin whilst it is rotated about a horizontal axis; then moulding the ends by tilting the mould first towards one end then the other whilst alternately rotating the mould in each direction; then continuing this whilst allowing the ends to cool; then moulding the body by continuing the alternating rotation sequence but with the mould horizontal, only the body part of the mould being heated; then continuing the alternating rotations without heating, and finally removing the mould. A two-part mould (Figs. 1-3, not shown) separated in the vertical plane and joined together by circumferential flanges is used, this being placed within an insulating enclosure carrying the heating elements and mounted in a framework arranged to be tilted to either side of a horizontal axle by a chain drive from an electric motor. At least two plug vents are provided, and are filled with material having a melting point such that it will melt after the powdered moulding material has coalesced. Details for the moulding of a 3000 litre polyethylene vat are described, the mould being alternately rotated, e.g. 5¥ revolutions in one direction and 6“ in the other.
