Abstract

1345520 Radar UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 19 April 1971 [2 April 1970] 15793/70 Heading H4D [Also in Division H1] In a microwave interferometer including a second waveguide means excited from a first waveguide 10, microwaves having two successive frequencies are propagated in the first waveguide, the difference in magnitude of the wave in the second waveguide means at the two frequencies is measured together with the ratio of that difference to one of the magnitudes, and the first waveguide is arranged to propagate waves towards a reflective target 25 the distance of which is to be determined. In one embodiment the second waveguide means comprises waveguides 16, 18 terminated in now-reflecting detectors 20, 22. A mathematical analysis is developed in the specification, distance L being (2n + 1)#/4 (where n is an integer and # is wavelength in the guide); it is assumed that the coupling into guides 16, 18 is low and that reflexion by target 25 is substantially complete. A phase shifter may be incorporated into waveguide 10 when investigating vibrations of a target, Fig. 2b (not shown). Many means for coupling the "side" guides to the main guide are described (see Division H1). Vibration of a target may be measured.
