Abstract
1344925 Moulding porous polytetrafluoroethylene articles KUREHA KAGAKU KOGYO KK 29 April 1971 [30 April 1970] 12217/71 Heading B5A [Also in Division C3] In a process for producing shaped articles of porous polytetrafluoroethylene, a polymerizable monomer, e.g. methyl methacrylate, vinyl chloride, styrene or vinylidene chloride which is capable of being polymerized to form a thermoplastic resin, is adsorbed or otherwise attached to particles of p.t.f.e. and then polymerized to form a polymeric mixture of thermoplastic resin and p.t.f.e.; the resulting mixture is kneaded at a temperature above the softening temperature of the thermoplastic resin to form a shaped article from which the thermoplastic resin is removed, e.g. by solvent extraction, thermal decomposition, chemical dissolution or chemical modification. In an example, a porous p.t.f.e. sheet is produced using polymethylmethacrylate as the thermoplastic resin, the resin being removed by extraction with tetrahydrofuran. In further examples, p.v.c. was removed by tetrahydrofuran extraction and polystyrene by heating at 300‹ C. The article produced is for example a filter, a gas diffusion membrane, an electrode or a partition membrane for use in electrolytic cells.
