Abstract

1344758 Probes MILLAR INSTRUMENTS Inc 19 June 1972 [1 July 1971] 28527/72 Heading A5R [Also in Division G1] In a fluid pressure transducer, e.g. for measuring blood pressure, a piezo-resistive strain gauge member 10 comprised of two individual elements in the form of a pair of pads 20a or 20b interconnected by a reduced neck portion 22a or 22b and having their pads bonded together via insulating material, has the pad of one element fixed to a diaphragm 14 subjected to the fluid pressure and the other pad to a fixed member 12 whereby flexure of the diaphragm causes compression in one neck portion and tension in the other, conductive material being provided on the surface of each pad to form electrodes. As shown, the diaphragm comprises a rigid centre portion 16 and a flexible outer portion 18 secured in an opening in the member 12. The member 12 may form the flattened tip of a catheter such that the transducer 10 is arranged inside the catheter tip, Figs. 4-7 (not shown). The catheter tip can be used to measure blood pressure inside the body or to measure blood pressure supplied to a chamber outside the body, Fig. 11 (not shown). The difference between two pressures can be measured by dividing a compartment by a member 12 in the form of a disc, Figs. 9 and 10 (not shown). The pressure of fluid flowing in a conduit can be measured by arranging the member 12 in a cut-out portion of the conduit, Figs. 12 and 13 (not shown).
