Abstract

1344621 Electroconductive coated paper IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 19 April 1971 [25 Feb 1970] 9115/70 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions D1-2] A method of improving the electroconductivity of paper comprises applying to at least one surface of the paper an aqueous solution of a polymer or copolymer containing in the molecule repeating units of the formula:- wherein R is H or methyl, R<SP>1</SP> is methyl or ethyl, R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> each is methyl or ethyl or taken together represent -CH 2 CH 2 OCH 2 CH 2 - or -(CH 2 ) n - where n=4, 5, or 6, A represents alkylene or hydroxy-substituted alkylene and X- is chloride or acetate ion, the polymer or copolymer having an average M.W. in the range 5 x 10<SP>3</SP>-2 x 10<SP>6</SP>. The polymer or copolymer may be prepared by the free radical catalysed polymerisation of a monomer, CH 2 =CR.COOAN<SP>+</SP>R<SP>1</SP>R<SP>2</SP>R<SP>3</SP>.X<SP>-</SP>, optionally with a further vinyl monomer, or by the free radical catalysed polymerisation of CH 2 =CR.COO ANR<SP>1</SP>R<SP>2</SP> optionally in the presence of a further vinyl monomer followed by quaternisation of the polymer or copolymer with a suitable quaternising agent. The vinyl co-monomer may be styrene, ethylene, propylene, acrylonitrile, acrylamide, diacetone acrylamide, vinyl acetate, vinyl toluene, divinyl benzene, or an acrylate or methacrylate. The solution of polymer or copolymer may be applied by coating, e.g. dipping, brushing together with one or more additives such as starch, water-soluble cellulose derivatives, polyvinyl alcohol, calcium carbonate and other pigments.
