Abstract
1344572 Hydrogen chloride IMI (TAMI) INSTITUTE FOR RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT 16 Feb 1972 [11 March 1971] 7161/72 Heading B1B A vapour containing at least 75% by weight hydrogen chloride is obtained at the top of a fractionation column by introducing aqueous hydrochloric acid containing 15 to 35% by weight of HCl into the upper region of the column and, at the same level or up to 4 plates above it, introducing a dehydrant salt solution while introducing superheated steam (e.g. at 175C.) into the bottom region of the column, the temperature of the dehydrant salt solution being such that it has a vapour pressure of 50 to 300mm Hg, and causes condensation of most of the steam inside the column. The preferred salt solution is 55% calcium chloride; and it is fed to the column at 80-90C. The residual water-vapour in the HCl vapour leaving the top of the column may be removed by passing it to a reflux condenser, or by contacting it with concentrated hydrochloric acid, sulphuric acid or phosphoric acid.
