Abstract

1344564 Floating booms BENNETT POLLUTION CONTROLS Ltd 16 May 1972 [17 May 1971] 22974/72 Heading E1H Oilspill recovering apparatus comprises a pair of flexible floating booms having above and below water portions the latter being hydrophobic and oleophilic to allow the passage of water but not oil therethrough, the booms being connected together at one end by means of an oil recovery device and towed or moored by the other ends to maintain a convergent funnel to concentrate the oil. Each boom B comprises a galvanized vinyl-covered steel chain-link screen 30 supported at intervals by rods 22 mounted on cables 24, 32 the lower cable 24 carrying lead weights. The above water portion Ba, Fig. 2 is covered by a folded strip of vinyl material 42, to the edges of which are sewn strips of oleophilic hydrophobic material 44a, 44b. Elongate foamed plastic (e.g. polyethylene) floats 36 are secured to each side of the booms. The towing end of each boom terminates in a float 46 secured to an end post 22L and connectible to a towing cable. The ends of the booms adjacent the recovery device are connected by a number of spaced cables to maintain the angle of convergence at the throat of the funnel constant. The booms are preferably towed by a pair of tugs, a third tug being attached to a collection vessel connected to the recovery device keeping the booms under tension.
