Abstract
1344434 Coating compositions BERGSTROM PAPER CO 21 Feb 1972 [24 Nov 1971] 7990/72 Heading C3P A non-aqueous composition for use in coating substrates has a dough-like consistency and comprises a finely divided pigment having an average particle size of 0À2 to 5 microns, a solution of synthetic resin binder in an organic solvent, and ingredient means (as defined below) for completely wetting the pigment, the resin binder constituting 5-30 wt. per cent (based on the pigment) of the composition, and the amount of solvent being only that necessary for a doughy consistency. The ingredient means is a generic term for a rheological modifier, a dispersing agent for the pigment and an antiflocculating agent to prevent flocculation of the pigment particles. Such means need not necessarily comprise three separate compounds for each of the components, since two or even one compound may serve all three purposes. The binder is preferably a thermoplastic polymer, polyvinylacetate being exemplified. Pigments specified are ZnO, kaolin clay, bentonite, fuller's earth, CaCO 3 , TiO 2 , silicas, and BaSO 4 . Organic pigments may also be used, and a mixture of pigments may also be used. Ingredient means specified, which are in fact rheological modifiers which serve all three purposes mentioned, are cationic, anionic, or nonionic surfactants of the conventional type, lubricants, e.g. metal carboxylates such as stearates, or antifoaming agents such as polyalkyl siloxanes. In the examples the ingredient means comprises, (1) and (3) an animated complex fatty acid ester and zinc naphthenate, and (2) a cocoaamine surfactant and zinc naphthenate. In the examples, the polymer and pigment are milled together and the diluent and ingredient means then mixed in. On dilution with further solvent, coating compositions are formed which can be coated on to many types of paper, polymer films, board, fibres, &c.
