Abstract

1343976 Thin layer chromatography elements SHIONOGI & CO Ltd 19 April 1971 [13 Feb 1970 14 March 1970 29 Dec 1970] 20897/71 Heading B1X [Also in Division C1] A thin layer chromatography element comprises a substrate coated with a porous sintered layer of powdered glass having a finely divided inorganic adsorbent other than a glass or material derived therefrom interspersed therein. The element is made by kneading the adsorbent and glass powder with a volatile solvent to form a slurry which is coated onto the substrate and sintered. the layer may be 150Á-2mm. thick. The adsorbent may be silica gel, alumina, diatomaceous earth magnesium silicate or kieselguhr. The glass binder may be of soda-lime, borosilicate, lead silicate, uranium glass, high silicate glass or a mixture thereof. The substrate may be glass, a metal (specified) or ceramic, e.g. steatite. The volatile solvent may be benzene, water, a ketone, alcohol or a mixture thereof. Further additions may include canada balsam, starch polyvinyl, alcohol polyacrylamide or gypsum. Fluorescing agents (specified) may also be added. The elements can be used to separate steroids or alkaloids (specified).
