Abstract
1343078 Radar CGE-COMPAGNIA GENERALE DI ELETTRICITA SpA 14 May 1971 [14 May 1970] 14944/71 Heading H4D [Also in Division F2] A manually actuated device for operating a number of control functions involved in the control of an aircraft ranging radar comprises a lever 1 pivotally mounted at 8 on a mounting plate 10 and carrying at its upper end a knob 2 pivotally movable in a plane perpendicular to the plane of pivotal movement of the lever 1, said lever pivotal movement actuating via a quadrant 33, gear 45 and an adjustable spring loaded friction slip coupling 46-52, a potentiometer 40 controlling the distance displacement of a movable mark of the radar whilst said knob pivotal movement actuates, via a further quadrant and gear arrangement 63, Fig. 6 and Fig. 7 (not shown), a potentiometer 76 controlling the azimuth displacement of the movable mark, the knob 2 being shaped for reception by a cupped palm of a left hand to permit such movements of the knob and/or lever by the palm without effort by the fingers, said knob also being shaped with finger rest positions and a fin 11 positioned between the index and middle fingers serving as a reference for positioning the hand on the knob 2, and further including a number of digitally operable actuating elements in the form of a thumb operable knurled wheel 3 rotation of which actuates a potentiometer controlling the radar gain control, a thumb operable selfcentring switch 4 upward movement of which actuates a control for oscillation of the movable mark and downward movement of which actuates a search resumption control, an index finger operable knurled wheel 5 rotation of which actuates a potentiometer 94 controlling the radar antenna inclination and two push button switches 6, 7 operable by the middle and third fingers and respectively actuating a change of distance scale control and angle of azimuth exploration control. The respective pivotal movements of the lever 1 and knob 2 are effected against adjustable resistances of permanently engaged adjustably spring loaded friction brake pad assemblies 32-38 (Fig. 5) and (70-74), Fig. 7 (not shown), which prevent accidental vibratory &c. displacements of the lever and knob.
