Abstract

1342890 Clay ceramics TAYLOR TUNNICLIFF & CO Ltd 31 Aug 1971 [4 June 1970] 26908/70 Heading C1H [Also in Division B1] A turned and shaped ceramic body, e.g. for a procelain insulator, is made by (a) mixing clay with water to form a plastic mass whose water content renders it unsuitable for turning, (b) confining the mass in an enclosure having filter means for drainage and applying a controlled pressure for a sufficient time to expel a given quantity of water so as to render the mass suitable for turning by leaving the mass with a predictable and substantially uniform lower water content and (c) shaping and turning the mass. The mass may then be fired in the normal way. Preferably by this process the water content of the clay is reduced from above to below 17% by wt. of wet mass. The clay 16 is placed between two metal blocks 10 and 11 having drainage passages 13, 14. Grooved and perforated metal plates 18, 18<SP>1</SP>, phosphor-bronze mesh 19, 19<SP>1</SP> and filter paper or cloth 20, 20<SP>1</SP> are placed between the clay and blocks 10 and 11, which are then pressed together by an hydraulic ram. In an alternative embodiment pressure may be provided isostatically by fluid pressure acting as a flexible membrane surrounding the clay.
