Abstract

1342488 Preparing polyesters using silicon catalysts FIBER INDUSTRIES Inc 24 Nov 1970 [24 Nov 1969 2 Nov 1970] 55838/70 Headings C3R and C3T [Also in Division B1] A process for preparing a polyester comprises carrying out at least the polycondensation stage in the presence of 0À01 to 2À0% by weight, based on weight of acid, of the product of reacting a first compound of the formula with a second compound of the formula wherein M is silicon, indium, yttrium, germanium, tin, lead, titanium, zirconium, arsenic, carbon, vanadium or tantalum, R 2 and R 4 are chlorine or hydroxy, the remaining R substituents are C 1-18 alkyl, C 1-18 acyl, C 1-18 alkoxy, C 6-18 aryl, C 6-18 aryloxy or hydrogen, provided that at least one of R 5 , R 6 , R 7 and R 8 is not hydrogen, and in the reaction from 0À1 to 20 moles of the second compound per mole of the first compound are reacted for from 50 minutes to 6 hours at 50‹ to 250‹ C. The examples describe preparing polyesters from dimethyl terephthalate with ethylene glycol or 1,4- butanediol, terephthalic acid with 1,4-butanediol and 4,4-sulphonyl dibenzoic acid dibutyl ester with 2,2-dimethyl propane-1,3-diol using as catalysts the reaction product of diphenyl silanediol with tetra-isopropyl titanate or tetraethoxy silane and diphenyldichlorosilane with tetraethylorthosilicate. A polyester containing 30 to 3000 p.p.m. of silicon furnished by a silicon compound soluble in the polyester and having a luminance greater than 60 and a low yellowness such that the luminance minus the yellowness (the L-Y parameter) of the polyester is at least 55 is claimed per se. Example 26 describes the reaction of equimolar quantities of diphenylsilanediol and tetraisopropyl titanate.
