Abstract
1342348 Cryosurgical instruments SPEMBLY TECHNICAL PRODUCTS Ltd 19 April 1971 [11 March 1970] 11709/70 Heading A5R A cryosurgical instrument comprises a thermally highly conductive probe 34 shaped to present an area which may be placed in contact with an operable tissue surface, with means for controllably refrigerating said area to facilitate congelation of the tissue in contact with said area, combined with a sleeve 39, encircling the probe and thermally insulated therefrom, the sleeve being arranged as to limit the extent of the zone of congealed tissue. The probe may take the form of a hollow tube 34, closed at one end to form a working area 34A, this working area being cooled by cold gas impinging on the inside surface of the tube, the cold gas being produced by allowing high pressure gas to escape from a feed duct 36 via a restricted orifice 36A, where Jouli-Thomson cooling of the gas takes place. The sleeve may be provided with some heating means. In the embodiment shown the sleeve 39 is a good thermal conductor and is thermally insulated from the probe near its working end by a plastics sleeve 38. The upper end of the sleeve is fixed into a ferrule 33 around which is fitted an electric heater 40. The current to the heater is switched on simultaneously with the high pressure gas. The suggested material for the sleeve and ferrule is silver. Two alternative heating means suggested are the use of exothermically reacting substances or fins to extend out from the sleeve.
