Abstract

1342198 Preparing polyesters WHITTAKER CORP 21 April 1972 18623/72 Heading C3R A method for making a polyester comprises heating a reaction mixture comprising (a) 17- 24% by weight of a C 10-26 fatty acid, (b) 30- 42% by weight of a polyol which consists of 45- 75% of a triol with the remainder being a diol, and (c) 40-56% by weight of a polycarboxylic acid which consists of 83-93% of an aromatic polycarboxylic acid with the remainder being a C 3-18 aliphatic polycarboxylic acid, to a temperature and for a time sufficient to esterify the reactants to produce the polyester. Preferably the reaction mixture is heated at 400-480‹ F. in an inert atmosphere and may contain a solvent for the reactants. The polyester may be cross-linked by reaction with less than 20% by weight of an aminoplast resin, based on the weight of polyester and aminoplast. The examples describe polyesters prepared from various saturated and unsaturated fatty acids and trimethylol ethane or propane; neopentyl glycol, dipropylene glycol, diethylene glycol or 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol; phthalic anhydride or isophthalic acid and adipic acid or dodecanyl succinic anhydride, and paints based on the above polyesters, titanium dioxide and butylated melamine optionally mixed with hexamethoxymethyl melamine.
