Abstract

1342144 Photo-electric-machine guard system CINCINNATI Inc 13 Dee 1971 [12 May 1971] 57776/71 Heading F2J [Also in Division G1] In a photo-electric guard system using the interruption of a light beam to stop a machine, the light source is modulated by modulating its current supply and the signal arising from the detection of the modulated light is compared with the modulation of the source current to effect shut down. Alternate lights of a series 14a-14g, Fig. 1, forming a protective light curtain are energized in antiphase by a square wave generator, and after shaping, the pulses from detectors 20a-20g positioned to recieve the respective modulated light beams, are applied to a comparator 26 to which the modulation from the supply current is also applied. The comparator comprises a NAND gate and produces an output pulse for each cycle of each phase if all signals-are present. The output pulses from the comparator are measured for separation and duration, for stopping the machine, and guard system muting arrangements may be incorporated to be operative for example during the up movement of a ram, together with a suitably positioned GUARD-OFF indicator. The switchoff may be actuated by overrun apparatus. False operation by metal deformity for example at the bottom of the downward stroke of a press, may also be avoided by synchronized muting. The arrangement is made fail-safe and includes limit-switch monitoring.
