Abstract

1341992 Catalyst composition NALCO CHEMICAL CO 19 April 1971 [26 Feb 1970] 22404/71 Heading B1E An attrition resistant cracking catalyst comprising 0 to 8% alkali metal silicate, 0 to 40% alumina, 1 to 25% zeolite, and 17-98% kaolinite clay is formed by: (a) adding a mineral acid (e.g. sulphuric acid) to kaolinite clay in a ratio 100% acid to clay of 0.2-0.6:1; (b) heating for 10mms. to 6hrs. at 60-218‹F; (c) adjusting the temperature to below 90‹F and a content of 1 to 10% wt. clay; (d) adding a 1 to 8% wt. alkali metal silicate solution over a period of 30-60 mms. while vigorously mixing to give a pH of 4.5 to 8.0; (e) adjusting to pH to 6-7 if necessary adding ammonium hydroxide or sodium aluminate; (f) adding 1 to 25% wt. zeolite; (g) filtering and spray drying; (h) washing with water, dilute sulphuric acid or aqueous ammonium hydroxide, sulphate, nitrate, acetate or formate; and (i) drying, e.g. by oven or tunnel drying. Alumina in the form of an aluminium salt of a mineral acid may be added between steps (d) and (e). In the Example the mineral acid is sulphuric acid and the silicate is sodium silicate.
