Abstract

1341412 Polyimides; polyimidazopyrrolones INSTITUT KHIMICHESKOI FIZIKI AKADEMII NAUK SSSR 30 Dec 1970 [7 Jan 1970] 61830/70 Heading C3R Thermostable heterocyclic polymer (PI) or (PIP) is made by reacting an amine monomer being aromatic diamine(s) and/or tetramine(s) or hydrochlorides thereof at 0-350‹ C. with an aromatized bis-adduct monomer (VI) formed by the Diels-Alder reaction between maleic anhydride and a bis-furanic compound (VII) in an inert atmosphere of argon, N 2 , CO 2 , or He, where: Ar is an optionally substituted aromatic group containing 1-3 rings; Ar<SP>1</SP> is an aromatic group containing 1 or 2 rings; R is H or aryl; M is (a) -CH=N-R<SP>1</SP>-N=CH- where R<SP>1</SP> is arylene, (b) arylene, (c) where R<SP>IV</SP> is arylene, (d) where R<SP>V</SP> is where R<SP>VI</SP> is H or OH, or (e) a single bond; n is 1 or 2; and m is a number such that intrinsic viscosity in H 2 SO 4 at 25‹ C. is #0-0À6 dl./g. The reaction may be performed at 0-100‹ C. in an organic solvent being dimethyl-formamide, -acetamide, or -sulphoxide, or N-methyl-pyrrolidone, followed by heat-treatment at 150-350‹ C. in vacuo. Also present may be 0À1-1À2 moles/l of LiCl, KCl, NaCl, KBr, or KI. Or the monomers may be reacted in polyphosphoric acid at 160-210‹ C., followed by treatment at 200-250‹ C. in vacuo. The heat treatment in vacuo may be performed on the uncyclized polymer in the form of a powder, film, or fibre, to effect cyclization. The monomers may also comprise a tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride. The uncyclized polymer comprises -COOH groups and optionally -NH 2 groups. The cyclized polymers may be dissolved in conc. mineral acids and formed into fibres. The polymers are also soluble in cresols, phenols, dichlorobenzenes, pyridine, and dimethylformamide and sulphoxide. The polymers may also be formed into moulded articles and foamed plastics, and may be used as a binder for laminated plastics. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 903,271.
