Abstract
1340991 Vibratory finishing J F RAMPE and W E WARD 7 April 1972 [8 April 1971] 16195/72 Heading B3D A method of handling abrasive media in conjunction with the operation of a finishing machine 10 having a receptacle 12 for receiving abrasive media and workpieces comprises transporting the abrasive media to the machine in a movable hopper dolly 24, raising the dolly to a position above the receptacle and tilting the dolly to discharge the media into the receptacle, lowering the dolly, moving the receptacle with the abrasive media and workpieces therein to impart a finishing action to the workpieces, discharging the workpieces and media from the receptacle on to a vibratory screener 23 with the hopper dolly positioned there-beneath, and vibrating the screener to cause the media to pass there-through back into the dolly while segregating the finished workpieces above the screen. The receptacle 12 of the finishing machine is carried by a support 11 and vibrated by a drive 13 and is disposed adjacent the screening-loading apparatus 20 which has an upright frame 21 formed with side walls 32. A carriage 22 is connected by pairs of links 52, 58 of equal length to the frame 21, the spacing between the pivots 56, 62 at one end of the links being greater than that between the pivots 54, 56 at the other end so that when the carriage is moved by hydraulic cylinders 64 from the screening position shown solid in Fig. 1 to the position, shown in phantom, the carriage only tilts slightly until it approaches the loading position wherein the dolly is tilted further to deposit the abrasive media into the receptacle 12. The dolly 24 is in the form of a pan 80 which is movable on wheels 101, 102 and at one end 86 is of funnel shape which an opening closable by a door 90. Flanges 112 on the pan engage flanges 113 on the carriage so that the dolly is raised with the carriage, the door opening when the dolly is in the vertical position so that abrasive media in the dolly falls into the receptacle. After the finishing operations, the abrasive media and workpieces pass on to a screen 74 which is mounted on the carriage and vibrated by a drive 70 so that the abrasive media falls into the dolly which can either be wheeled away to a storage position and replaced by a further dolly or be raised by the carriage to return the abrasive media to the receptacle.
