COX, J. C. MUNRO, K. E. AINSCOW, D. M. S. FAIRWEATHER, R. DOWNHAM, J. A. N. DENNIS, F. A. FISHER and B. J. LUXTON [trading as RENDEL PALMER & TRITTON] 2 March 1972 [22 Dec 1970] 60889/70 Heading ElH [Also in Division F2] A movable barrage comprises a gate 2 having an elongate portion of sector-shaped section pivoted about a horizontal axis transverse to the waterway in which it is located, and a base 28 located in the bed of the waterway and provided with a recess 31 to receive and house the sector-shaped portion of the gate. The sector-shaped portion has within its interior a plurality of chambers, some of which may be sealed to form buoyancy chambers, the remainder all intercommunicating and being ballastable, the end portions 8 of the gate having flap valves 24 for admitting water, the sector having outlet flap valves 22 and air admission and exhaust valves 26. The end portions 8 are mounted via self-aligning bearings on pivot pins 10, or the pins 10 are mounted via bearings in the supports 12 (see Division F2). The gate is raised and lowered by means of ropes 36, and has a scraper 46 along one edge to remove any silt from the base recess 31.
