1340831 Conveyer safety devices RHEINSTAHL EGGERS-KEHRHAHN GmbH 20 April 1972 18323/72 Heading B8A Means for stopping an escalator should a human hand, for example, be drawn into the region where a travelling handrail 1 enters a casing 2, comprises a switch 17 operated by a resiliently mounted assembly 18 which is depressed by a pair of inner gates 11, 12 when the gates pivot into the casing 2. The clearance between the handrail 1 and the adjacent edge of the gates 11, 12 is less than the size of a human finger and the clearance between the handrail and the edge of a pair of outer gates 3, 4 is greater, by the size of a finger, than the other clearance. Screws (13) form spacers between the inner and outer gates and an upstanding portion (23) of the assembly (18) normally maintains the outer gates closed, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown). In operation, a hand which is pulled inwards past the outer gates 3, 4 engages the inner gates 11, 12 which, in depressing the assembly 18, release the outer gates and serious injury is avoided. Accidental or unauthorized stopping of the escalator is minimized by the normally latched outer gates.
