Abstract

1340458 Aromatic amines TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 25 Feb 1972 [4 March 1971 27 Oct 1971] 8738/72 Heading C2C A process for the production of aromatic amines by reduction of the corresponding nitroaromatic compound using a homogeneous ligand-stabilized ruthenium or iron complex catalyst the donor atom of whose ligand is selected from Groups IVb, Vb and VIb of the Periodic Table comprises: (a) mixing the nitroaromatic compound with at least 0À0001 moles of at least one of the catalysts in an amount of oxidizer-free, nonaqueous inert solvent sufficient to solubilize the catalyst and the nitro-aromatic compound in a hydrogen atmosphere at a pressure of at least 100 p.s.i.g.; (b) maintaining the mixture under superatmospheric hydrogen pressure, at from 20 to 160‹ C. until the nitroaromatic compound is reduced to the corresponding amine; and (c) separating the aromatic amine.
