Abstract

1340304 Microwave ring hybrids MULLARD Ltd 10 March 1972 11312/72 Heading H1W A microwave ring hybrid comprises six quarter-wave sections, having impedances Z 1 , Z 2 , Z 3 , arranged as shown, and four ports of which three are formed by transmission lines 1, 2, 3 shunt-coupled to the ring at junctions between sections, and a fourth by transmission line 4 series-coupled to the ring at such a junction. The ring is formed as a slot line in a conductive ground plane on one side of a dielectric substrate (not shown). A branch of impedance Z 5 is also formed as a slot line and makes a series junction with the two ring sections of impedance Z 3 , the remote end of this branch being provided with an open circuit 9. Transmission lines 1, 2, 3, 4 are formed as strip lines on the opposite side of the substrate to the slot lines, and are coupled to the latter by respective shortcircuiting pins 5, 6, 7, 8 adjacent the respective junctions, such couplings being of the shunt type. An input signal applied to port 1 yields equal cophasal outputs at ports 2, 3 whilst an input signal applied to port 4 yields equal outputs in antiphase at ports 2, 3. Ports 1 and 4 are isolated from each other. The ring operates over a broad band if the impedances are correctly chosen. The Specification gives Z 0 = Z 4 = Z 5 = Z 6 = 50#Z 1 = 1À4Z 0 , Z 2 = 0À8Z 0 , Z 3 = 0À6Z 0 .
