Abstract

1340226 Gas discharge display panels PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 19 Aug 1971 [22 Aug 1970] 38976/71 Heading H1D A display device in which positive column discharge is produced comprises a plurality of cavities having walls coated with fluorescent material and each containing electrodes spaced apart by at least twice the cavity width and means for reducing the ignition voltage of the discharge. The device comprises crossed conductor arrays 35 ... 39, 56 ... 59 on either side of a plate 3 containing cavities coated with reflecting TiO 2 and Ca halophosphate phosphor. The ignition voltage is reduced by charged particles from cathode glow discharges in a corresponding array of cavities in a plate 18 between conductors 56 ... 59 and a third array 64 ... 66. A sustain voltage below the ignition voltage is applied between the first and second arrays. A potential between a selected pair of conductors in the second and third arrays produces the glow discharge. Current limiting resistors comprising a resistive layer on all electrodes of one array may be provided. The panel is filled with Hg and A at 7 cm. pressure. In another embodiment the cavities in the plate 3 extend into a gas space in which charged particles are produced by a plasma discharge between a pair of electrodes; a discharge is produced in selected cavities by varying the potential applied to the corresponding conductors of the first and second arrays. In a further embodiment the plate 18 is rotated through 90 degrees so that first and second arrays are parallel and a gas space in which plasma is generated by a discharge between two electrodes added behind plate 18. The passage of charged particles to the cavities in plate 3 and the display discharges then controlled by the potentials applied to the second array electrodes; the potential between the first and third arrays being constant. The device is used to display alpha-numeric symbols and colour TV if several phosphors are used.
