Abstract

1340138 Disposable diaper PROCTER & GAMBLE CO 19 April 1971 [1 April 1970] 25758/71 Heading A5R [Also in Divisions A3 B1 and G1] A disposable article comprises a translucent backing sheet 2 of water-impervious material, an absorbent pad 3 and a small amount of moisture-actuated indicating agent 1 distributed over some or all of the area of the article and positioned between the backing sheet and the pad. The absorbent pad 3, which comprises plies of wadding prepared from wood pulp fibres is enveloped on its moisture-receiving surface by an inner sheet 4 which consists of a porous, non-woven fabric. An adhesive edge fastening (5) serves to attach absorbent pad 3 to inner sheet 4 and also to backing sheet 2. The dye particles 6 of the indicating agent and, if present, the diluent masking agent particles 7 used to mask the colour of the dry indicating agent until wetted are situated and mechanically and electrostatically retained between the surfaces of the absorbent pad and backing sheet. The indicating agent, which may consist of certain vegetable and food dyes, may be extended over the entire outer surface of the absorbent pad, or preferably, in order to reduce the amount of indicating agent used and to eliminate the possibility of skin contact and staining, can be placed in smaller indicating areas (8). When the indicating agent is exposed to liquids penetrating the absorbent pad, the dye, or the dye and the diluent masking agent, is dispersed and the colour of the resulting dye solution seen through the backing sheet thus indicating soiling by wetness. The dye in the moisture-actuated indicating agent can be, e.g. intro, monoazo, diazo, phthalocyanine, quino -line, xanthene, triaryl methane, indigoid and vegetable dyes such as carotene, chlorophyll, tea and coffee. Suitable diluent masking agents can be talcum, whiting, silica, sugar, salt and starch.
