Abstract
1339575 Granulating fatty materials EASTMAN KODAK CO 16 Dec 1970 [19 Dec 1969] 59642/70 Heading B5A To form, from a fatty material, a particulate product which is not susceptible to agglomeration, the fatty material, which must have a melting point above ambient temperature, is pumped, from a feed tank 13 where it is melted, to spray nozzles 20 situated inside a chamber 23 cooled by a supply of cold air from inlet 26; the particulate material so formed is passed through valve 58 on to a covered conveyer 32, where it is roughly mixed with a flow conditioning agent, e.g. silica, passed on to the conveyer from a powder feeder 55, the rough mixture being passed to an impact mill 63 for more thorough mixing. The air from the chamber 23 is recycled via exhaust conduit 35, conduits 36, 37 to the refrigeration unit 27, 28, and the fine particle size fatty material extracted with air is removed therefrom by a cyclone 33 and filter system 34, and passed on to the conveyer through valves 59, 60. The material on the conveyer is cooled by a flow of air from the cold air duct 25 passing through conduit 38, along the conveyer and into the chamber 23 through conduit 43. The process may be used to produce particulate fatty acids, fatty acid esters of polyhydric alcohols, e.g. glycerides, or carboxylic esters of polyhydric alcohols &c. Examples given are succinylated mono-glycerides having stearic, myristic, palmitic or behenic acid residues. The "flow conditioning agent" may be magnesium aluminium silicates, silica or starch.
