Abstract

1339399 Peelable surgical packages JOHNSON & JOHNSON 8 May 1972 21363/72 Headings B8C and B8P A bacteria-impervious package for surgical drapes, sponges, instruments, &c., comprises a bacteria-impervious, air-permeable paperboard blank 12 which is folded up about a centre line F 1 so that side panels 14, 16 are sealed along their edges by the pattern of adhesive coating 18 to provide a sealed chamber 20 containing, for example, a surgical drape 11 the side panels 14, 16 being extended beyond the seal at the mouth end 21 of the package to form pull tabs 22, 24 which have bending scores 32, 34 and which are for peeling open the mouth end 21 of the package up to terminating score lines 38, 40. In a package of this kind, in order to provide for rapid opening and easy removal of the surgical drape 11, score lines 26, 26<1> are cut into, but not through, the thickness of the panel 16 along the portion of adhesive strip 18 which extends across the mouth and along the longitudinal edges 28, 30 and up to the terminating bending score 40 of the panel 16. Also, the seal between the panels 14, 16 has an internal cohesive strength and an adhesive strength to the panel material greater than the cohesive strength of the weakened section to the bulk of the weakened panel so that the package may be opened by pulling the tabs 22, 24 in the manner shown in Fig. 3 and delaminating the material of the panel 16 in the weakened marginal section. In order to aid the peeling of the panel 16 from the panel 14 the score line 34 of the tab 24 cuts across the apex of the pattern of adhesive outlined by the cuts 26, 26<1> across the mouth 21 of the package to provide an initial delaminating area 36, Figs. 3, 4. A through cut 42 extends from the edge of the mouth 21 along the centre line F1 up to the terminating bend 38. In a modification, Figs. 6, 8, the package is formed by folding a blank 41 about a set of diamond-shaped transverse bending scores 44- 44 to provide a base 46 for a larger sealed chamber. Instead of being diamond-shaped the bending scores at 44 may be rectangular, circular, or oval, &c. Fig. 8 shows the package open ready for the removal of a pair of clamps 66. When it is desired to open completely the package the terminating scores 62, 64 are eliminated. A suitable adhesive for the seals 18, 49 is heat-sealable polyvinyl acetate.
