Abstract

1339018 Chucks; tube expanders G N A PERSSON K J-E ERIKSSON S A KARLSSON and J L BERGHOLM 2 Dec 1970 [2 Dec 1969] 57370/70 Headings B3B and B3J [Also in Divisions B7 B8 E1 and F2] A flexible surface, shown in plan in Fig. 1a and elevation in Fig. 1c, includes at least two rows of surface elements 1, each surface element having two pivot pins 2 for connecting the element to two different surface elements in one or more adjacent rows and the surface elements in the same row being interconnected by motion transfer means 3, 4. The motion transfer means may be as shown or consist of meshing tooth segments or pins of flexible material. Flexible surfaces composed of flexible elements 101, Fig. 11a, may be incorporated in a chuck for gripping rods or tubes. The outermost surface elements are provided with guide arms 105 having rollers which engage in grooves 107 in the chuck ring and in grooves 109 in the chuck housing. Relative rotation of the ring and housing causes movement of the flexible surface towards the dotted position. An internally expanding modification of this arrangement may be used as a tube expander.
