Abstract

1338854 1,1<SP>1</SP>- Dianthraquinonyl compounds CIBA-GEIGY AG 8 Sept 1972 [14 Oct 1971] 41923/72 Heading C4P The invention comprises 1,1<SP>1</SP>-dianthraquinonyl compounds of the general formula wherein each Z is a urethane group linked via the N atom and the anthraquinone nuclei may be further substituted, e.g. by methoxy or ethoxy. They are prepared by reacting a 1- halogeno anthraquinone having a urethane group Z in the 2-position with copper powder in a strongly polar aprotic solvent optionally in presence of a catalyst. Preferred solvents are dimethyl formamide, dimethyl acetamide, N- methylpyrrolidone or dimethyl sulphoxide and the reaction takes place at 50-130‹ C. Iodine may be used as catalyst. The compounds may be converted to flavanthrones by strong acid treatment, preferably using 80-100% sulphuric acid.
