Abstract

1338391 Dispersing oil IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 21 Dec 1970 [2 Jan 1970] 185/70 Heading C1C [Also in Divisions C2 C3 and B1] Oil slicks on water are emulsified and dispersed by the addition of an oil-soluble substantially water-insoluble compound of formula wherein R.CO represents an acyl radical of an unsaturated or branched chain fatty acid (10-22 C atoms), R 1 represents a phenyl, naphthyl, alkylphenyl, alkylnaphthyl, arylphenyl, aralkylphenyl, alkarylphenyl or aralkyl radical, n is integer from 2 to 4, and m is integer from 2 to 30. The oxyalkylene units need not all be the same and may be as a random or block copolymer. The emulsifying agent may be added to the oil and water as a solution, as a fine spray, and mechanically agitated, in an amount of from 0À1 to 10% by weight of oil to be emulsified. The unsaturated acyl radicals RCO- may be derived from oleic, linoleic, and linolenic acids, soya bean, linseed and tall oil fatty acids which may contain minor proportions of saturated fatty acids and/or rosin acids, or may be radicals deviced from synthetic acids obtained by oxidation of petroleum stock and paraffin waxes. R 1 may be phenyl, #-naphthyl, benzyl, diisopropyl-#-naphthyl, nonylphenyl, o- or p-benzylphenyl and o- or p-phenylphenyl. The compounds may also be applied as adsorbates on inert materials such as pumice or powdered chalk, or as chemical complexes with urea, in solvents such as isopropanol, kerosene, solvent naphtha or mixtures thereof.
