Abstract

1338142 Polymer compositions DOW CHEMICAL CO 18 March 1971 7244/71 Heading C3P Polymer compositions capable of forming articles having surface gloss and low haze comprise a solid ethylene polymer having incorporated therein (1) 0À002 to 0À05 weight per cent based on the weight of the composition of a metal salt of a fatty acid having from 7 to 22 carbon atoms and (2) 0À001 to 0À20 weight per cent of a metal salt of an aromatic carboxylic acid. The preferred fatty acid metal salt is zinc stearate and the aromatic carboxylates are preferably sodium or aluminium benzoate. The preferred ethylene polymers which have a density of 0À914 to 0À950 and a melt index of 0À01 to 20À0 include polyethylene, blends of polyethylene, copolymers of ethylene and aliphatic ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic esters and ethylene terpolymers comprising an aliphatic ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic ester, an aliphatic ethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbon and ethylene. The polymer compositions may also contain slip-agents, anti-block agents, anti-oxidants, stabilizers, anti-static agents, pigments and waxes. The examples describe polymer compositions of polyethylene or ethylene/vinylacetate copoly- mer containing zinc stearate and sodium or aluminium benzoates, the performance of these compositions being compared with X-control and comparative compositions containing no or only one of the above additives. The compositions are prepared by melt mixing or dryblending the constituents.
