Abstract

1338081 Doppler radar T G THORNE 27 April 1971 [4 May 1970] 21369/70 Heading H4D An aircraft Doppler navigator in which vibration of the aircraft causes oscillation of the transmitted beam in the depression angle plane includes means for measuring the resultant amplitude modulation of the echo signals to indicate the nature of the overflown terrain. A pendulum or gyroscope vibration sensor 31 is energized by the detected output from the navigator 21 thus providing a signal representing the product of the vibration and received signal amplitudes. This is used as a reference signal in a PSD 26 which also receives the navigator 21 Doppler output and provides a signal representing the magnitude of the amplitude modulation in the received signals. Comparison with the vibration amplitude in comparator 34 indicates the nature of the terrain (i.e. land, rough or calm sea). The comparator outputs select an appropriate calibration constant for the receiver 21. In an alternative arrangement the amplitude modulation is detected by comparing the received signals from forward and rear looking beams followed by low pass filtering (Fig. 2, not shown).
