Abstract

1337506 Benzofuran derivatives PFIZER Inc 19 April 1971 [15 Oct 1970] 23468/71 Heading C2C Novel benzofuran derivatives of the formula and the base salts thereof with pharmacologically acceptable cations, wherein X and Y each are H, F, Cl, Br, C 1-5 alkyl, C 1-5 alkoxy, CF 3 or OCF 3 ; and R is naphthyl, phenyl, or mono- or di-substituted phenyl wherein each substituent is chosen from F, Cl, Br, C 1-4 alkyl, C 1-3 alkoxy or C 1-3 alkylthio CF 3 or OCF 3 ; are prepared by reacting the appropriately substituted 2,3- dihydrofuran-2-ones with isocyanates of the formula RNCO or by reacting the appropriate 2,3 - dihydrofuran - 2 - ones in the form of alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salts with ureas of the formula (R<SP>1</SP>) 2 NCONHR, wherein R<SP>1</SP> is an aryl group. 2,3 - Dihydrobenzofuran - 2 - ones substituted by one or two C 1-5 alkyl groups are obtained by cyclizing the corresponding 2-hydroxyphenylacetic acids. Pharmaceutical compositions, suitable for oral or parenteral administration, contain the above novel compounds or salts thereof and carriers. The compounds possess anti-inflammatory activity.
