Abstract

1337199 Bending sheet glass SAINT-GOBAIN 21 April 1971 [23 April 1970] 10509/71 Heading C1M In the bending of a glass sheet, the glass sheet is heated to bending temperature and is applied to a mould of the desired shape by reducing the atmospheric pressure between the opposed surfaces of the sheet and the mould and in the region surrounding the periphery of the mould so that the sheet is applied to the mould surface. A glass sheet 1 passes on rollers 7 through a furnace 3, a bending cell 4, conditioning cell 5 and removal area 6, the rollers 7 have separate transmission systems in each section and the heating means 8, 9 in furnace 3, 12, 13 in cell 4 and not shown in cell 5 are each controlled by thermocouples 10, 11; 14, 15 and not shown, respectively. In cell 4, a mould 16 or 24 is mounted in a shroud 17 on a column 19 movable vertically by a ram 20. The shroud 17 fits over the edges of mould 16 or 24 with a small clearance and is connected by pipes 18 to a suction device. The mould 16 may also be provided with small diameter ducts 23 (Fig. 5) to its operative surface and connected by duct 21 to a suction device. The mould may be convex or concave and in each case may have a complementary frame, as frame 28 (Fig. 13) or lower mould which may be solid or with ducts to a suction device. In operation, when the sheet 1b is curved by suction between mould 16 or 24 and the sheet, the ram 20 is operated to raise the mould and a carriage 22, on its own or with the complementary frame or mould, which has been pre-heated in cell 5, is moved into cell 4 on rails 33 and the mould 16 or 24 with attached sheet lowered to close to the frame, mould or carriage 22 and suction stopped so that the curved sheet drops by gravity, with suction from the lower mould if provided. The carriage 22 is then removed through cell 5 to the removal area 6. Particularly for convex mould 24 (Fig. 13), to assist bending of the edges, the frame 28 is used to press upwards by counterweights 29 mounted on pivots 30 on the carriage 22. Rollers 7 are preferably of small diameter and made of cast silica covered by a sleeve of woven refractory fibres such as silica fibres. The moulds and frames are of castable refractory cement or similar non-deformable material.
