Abstract

1337052 Treating ethylene/acrylic acid copolymers GULF RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO 27 Sept 1971 [30 Sept 1970] 44833/71 Heading C3P [Also in Division B5] Ethylene/"acrylic acid" copolymers of improved optical properties and suitable for the manufacture of laminated safety glass are prepared by dissolving a random copolymer of ethylene and a C 3-7 α,#-unsaturated monocarboxylic acid containing 0À04 to 0À5 mol of acid per mol of ethylene, in a solvent at a temperature of at least 100‹ C., admixing the resulting solution with a non-solvent selected from glycols and ethylene glycol alkyl ethers, separating a precipitate formed, adding to the copolymer solution a precipitant selected from monohydric alcohols, acetone and methyl ethyl ketone and separating the precipitated copolymer. The acid may be acrylic, methacrylic, ethacrylic, crotonic, isocrotonic, tiglic or senecioic acid; and minor proportions of units of other monomers, e.g. vinyl acetate, acrylamide and methacrylamide, may also be present. The solvent may be a mixture of xylene with acetic acid or isopropanol. In Example II ethylene/acrylic acid copolymer prepared by thermal decomposition of ethylene/isopropyl acrylate copolymer is dissolved in xylene/acetic acid at 130‹ C., the solution is treated with ethylene glycol monoethyl ether and allowed to cool to ambient temperature, the precipitated copolymer is filtered off, and further copolymer is precipitated by adding methanol and recovered by filtration.
