1336883 Benzyl cyanide ALBRIGHT & WILSON Ltd 6 Jan 1972 [8 Jan 1971] 955/71 Heading C2C Benzyl cyanide is prepared by contacting benzyl chloride with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal cyanide of a pH of less than 10À5 in the presence of from 0À001 to 0À05 moles per mole of benzyl chloride of a quaternary ammonium compound of the formula where R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> are the same or different hydrocarbon radicals the total number of carbon atoms in the compound being from 12 to 24 carbon atoms, and X is an anion.
