Abstract

1336805 Modifying metallic surfaces MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC WORKS Ltd and KANSAI PAINT CO Ltd 22 Feb 1972 [22 Feb 1971 22 Dec 1971] 8192/72 Heading C7U [Also in Division C4] An aqueous coating composition which may be used on metal surfaces comprises (A) a watersoluble silicate selected from (1) silicates of formula M 2 O x SiO 2 wherein M is an alkali metal or a group -N(CH 2 OH) 4 , -N(C 2 H 4 OH) 4 , or -C(NH 2 ) 2 NH, and x is 0À5-5 (2) silicates as in (1) modified with at least one fluoride and/or silicofluoride of Ca, Al, Mg, Zn or Zr, or (3) silicates as in (1) modified with at least one oxide and/or hydroxide of Al, Ca, Mg, Zr, V, Zn or Cs, and (B) a phosphate hardener selected from (a) phosphates of formula M i O j mP 2 O 5 wherein M is Al, Mg, Ca, Mn, Zn, Fe or Cu, i is 1 or 2, and j is 1 or 3, and m is 0À25-4 or (b) condensed phosphates prepared by heating a phosphate (a) with at least one double oxide of Zn, Mg and/or Ca with a transition or GpIII or IV metal e.g. T, Al, or Fe, the phosphate (a) or (b) having been pre-treated with at least one silicate of type (1) (2) or (3) before being mixed with component (A). The modified silicates are obtained by heating 0À5-30 p.b.w. fluoride, silicofluoride, oxide or hydroxide with 100 p.b.w. silicate (based on the dry, non-hydrated silicate), and the condensed phosphates by heating 0À2- 1À5 p.b.w. double oxide with 1 p.b.w. simple phosphate, optionally in the presence of siliceous material e.g. SiO 2 . The phosphate or condensed phosphate is mixed with a silicate or modified silicate in water, optionally with a dispersant, until the slurry or paste has a pH of 5-9À5, as the pre-treatment before mixing with (A). The coating composition may also include inorganic pigments and/or fillers, e.g. ferric oxide, titania, chrome oxide, clay, bentonite, sand,calcium carbonate, gypsum, furnace waste or mica, and may constitute a paint, primer, or printing ink. Hardening at 150-250‹ C is required.
