Abstract

1336394 Pigment compositions comprising polyacrylonitrile PECHINEY UGINE KUHLMANN 19 April 1971 [25 March 1970] 25208/71 Heading C3P A pigmentary composition comprises (a) at least one colouring matter which is insoluble in water and in the organic solvents used for spinning fibres based on homo- or copolymers of acrylonitrile, (b) a non-ionic surface-active agent which is insoluble in water but soluble in the organic solvents used for spinning fibres based on these homo- or copolymers in a weight (B) of between 1 and 10% inclusive of the weight (A) of the colouring matter, and (c) a homo- or copolymer based on acrylonitrile in a weight (C) such that the weight ratio is between 20 and 95. The colouring matter may be a mineral pigment, e.g. carbon black, iron oxides, cadmium oranges, chromium yellow, molybdenum red or titanium dioxide, or an organic pigment, such as an azo, azomethine, anthraquinone, phthalocyanine or indigo pigment. The non-ionic surfactant may be (a) a water-insoluble product of addition of ethylene oxide to a fatty alcohol or alkylphenol, (b) a water-insoluble polyalkylene glycol or ether thereof, having a viscosity of 10 to 470 centistokes at 37À8‹C, (c) a compound of Formula I where x is a whole number greater than 20 and y + z is such that the content of -(OCH 2 CH 2 )- is less than 10% of the molecular weight, or (d) a compound of Formula II where x 1 +x 2 +x 3 +x 4 is a whole number greater than 16 and y 1 +y 2 +y 3 +y 4 is such that the content of -(OC 2 H 4 ) is less than 10% of the molecular weight. The polymer may be a copolymer of acrylonitrile with an acrylic or methacrylic acid ester or a terpolymer of acrylonitrile, methylvinylpyridine and vinyl acetate or vinyl chloride. The pigmentary compositions of the invention may be prepared by (a) introducing zinc chloride or ammonium thiocyanate or an alkali metal thiocyanate and the polymer into an aqueous dispersion of the colouring matter and the surface-active agent, the weights of colouring matter (A), surface active agent (B), water (A<SP>1</SP>), polymer (C), and zinc chloride (D) or thiocyanate (D<SP>1</SP>) being such that the following relations are satisfied then (b) diluting the mixture with water until the ratio is less than or equal to 0À4, and (c) isolating the precipitate obtained. The colouring matter may be in the form of a pressed aqueous paste, or the colouring matter, in the form of a powder may be ground in aqueous medium. The pigmentary compositions of the invention may be used for bulk coloration of homo- or copolymers of acrylonitrile. In the examples the polymer component of the pigmentary composition is: (1) to (4) and (7) to (32) a copolymer of 94% acrylonitrile and 6% methyl methacrylate; (5) a copolymer of 90% acrylonitrile and 10% of a mixture of vinyl acetate and methylvinylpyridine; and (33) a copolymer of 91% acrylonitrile and 9% methyl acrylate. In Examples (34) to (36), polyacrylonitrile and a copolymer of 90% acrylonitrile and 10% methyl acrylate are mass coloured using the pigmentary compositions of the invention.
