Abstract

1336101 4 - (2<SP>1</SP> - Norbornyl) - 2 - butanones MONSANTO CO 3 Jan 1972 [4 Jan 1971] 67/72 Heading C2C The invention comprises compounds having the formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen or methyl and R is hydrogen, or an alkyl group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms. They may be prepared by reacting an aldehyde of the formula with a ketone of the formula where R<SP>11</SP> is hydrogen or alkyl or alkenyl having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, in a basic medium to form an aldol of the formula and dehydrating and hydrogenating this aldol to form the required product. The compounds of the invention may be used in fragrance compositions.
